Each week, I will post educational resources to support your child's learning while we are away. Currently, all resources and weekly plans are optional. They will not be graded. The activities are aligned to state standards and support learning we have done in class. They will help students retain knowledge they have gained so far this year, and encourage continued growth in reading and writing.
Here are some things you are welcome to try out this week:
- ISD Second Grade Emergency Education Learning Plan: https://wakelet.com/wake/55a7ef3f-9254-4c60-9e77-23aed0e7b562. OPTIONAL. The plan, curated by teachers and coaches across the district, recommends the following:
- Read a book of your choice for 20-30 minutes.
- Complete 30 minutes of math practice on Zearn. All student accounts have been set to coincide with where we left off in Module 6. Research shows that Zearn is most effective when students spend 30 minutes per day, 4 days per week, on the program.
- Choose one or more activities in each of the following categories: reading/writing, math, science/social studies, enrichment. Click the wakelet link above to view all activities.
MRS. WRIGHT RECOMMENDS:
In addition to the learning plan above, here are some of Mrs. Wright's favorite learning options from around the web. Feel free to try out any that interest you and your student! Many kidlit writers and illustrators are creating and sharing new resources -- I'll add to this section of our post each week as I find them throughout the week.
- Additional math practice with ST Math. ST Math is my favorite math software on the market, and they are offering free home accounts through June 30. ST Math helps students to master the visual and conceptual foundation for a math idea before working through the numerical algorithm, and it feels like a game to kids (they have to help a penguin navigate math obstacles in order to advance). https://www.stmath.com/coronavirus
- Stay At Home Storytime with Oliver Jeffers: Picture book creator Oliver Jeffers reads his books aloud, then talks about how he made each story. New book added daily. https://www.oliverjeffers.com/books#/abookaday/
- Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems: Picture book creator Mo Willems teaches a lunchtime art lesson M-F, gives tours of his studio, and talks about some of his beloved books like Elephant & Piggie. https://www.kennedy-center.org/education/mo-willems/
- At Home with Emily Arrow: daily music lessons and stories on YouTube from music teacher and author Emily Arrow. Guest appearances from authors like Ben Clanton (author of Narwhal and Jelly). https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCF3fmzbEwONd0Trjrhqeauw/videos
